Physician-Assisted
Weight Loss

weight loss treatment in Greenville Med Spa, South Carolina

Have you struggled to control your weight for years? Have you rapidly peeled off pounds with trendy diets— only to gain the weight back within a few months?  At Beauty & Wellness Care, our focus is on safe, sustainable weight loss, assisted by a medical doctor.

We take a multi-pronged approach:
1) Curb emotional eating.
2) Boost physical activity.
3) Use medication to help you lose weight and keep it off.

At the initial consultation, Dr. Christopher will take your medical history, review your labs and learn about your relationship with food. Then she will design a customized weight loss program for you, incorporating a healthy meal plan, recommendations for physical activity, and a prescription for the medicine that best fits your needs. Our patients have had the most success with two medicines, Semaglutide and Tirzepatide. Both are administered with a weekly subcutaneous injection. For your convenience, our office staff will teach you how to inject yourself, so that you can do it at home. Here’s some information about these medications:

Semaglutide

Semaglutide is a highly effective weight loss medication, especially when combined with  sensible eating and moderate exercise. Studies have shown that patients lose as much as 20% of their body weight while on medication, and most importantly, they are able to keep the weight off.

Is semaglutide right for you?

Semaglutide is recommended for adults who are overweight (BMI over 27) or obese (BMI over 30).

Is semaglutide FDA approved?

Yes, it was FDA-approved for weight loss in June 2021.

How does semaglutide work?

Semaglutide works by mimicking an intestinal hormone (GLP-1) that targets areas of the brain involved in regulating appetite, cravings, and food intake. It also slows the emptying of your GI tract so that you feel full longer. As a result, you eat less, yet feel full. This helps you to lose weight and maintain that weight loss.

OTHER BENEFITS OF SEMAGLUTIDE:

  • Lowers the blood sugar
  • Improves blood pressure
  • Lowers triglyceride levels
  • Improves HDL cholesterol levels

How much weight can you lose with semaglutide?

In clinical trials, people taking a weekly dose of semaglutide had an average reduction in body weight of 5-10 %.After 68 weeks (17 months) half of the participants lost 15% of their body weight, and nearly a third lost 20%.

How long does it take to lose weight on semaglutide?

Some people begin to see results within the first few weeks, but it may take eight weeks or longer for the effects to be noticeable. Most people also experience gradual improvements in their overall health conditions, such as blood sugar levels.

Side effects:

Like most medications, Semaglutide can have side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation
  • Heartburn
  • Burping

Tirzepatide

Tirzepatide was initially developed to control blood sugar levels of people with Type II Diabetes. Researchers discovered that it can also lead to significant, sustained weight loss. Studies show that people who take weekly injections of the medication, in combination with moderate exercise and a sensible diet, can lose as much as 21% of their body weight.

Tirzepatide mimics two hormones produced in the intestines, GLP-1 and GIP. The medicine acts upon areas of your brain involved in regulating appetite, cravings, and food intake. Tirzepatide helps you feel full while eating less, leading you to lose weight. The medicine also slows the passage of food through the digestive tract, which effectively reduces appetite.

Is tirzepadite FDA-approved?

Yes. In November 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Tirzepatide (sold under the brand name Zepbound) for weight loss.

Is tirzepadite right for you?

This medication is recommended for adults who are obese (BMI over 30), or overweight (BMI over 27) with at least one weight-related health issue. You are NOT a good candidate for Tirzepatide if you have any of the following: diabetic retinopathy, low blood sugar, decreased kidney function, pancreatitis, medullary thyroid cancer (or a family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma), or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2.

How does it work?

Tirzepatide mimics two hormones produced in the intestines, GLP-1 and GIP. The medicine acts upon areas of your brain involved in regulating appetite, cravings, and food intake. Tirzepatide helps you feel full while eating less, leading you to lose weight. The medicine also slows the passage of food through the digestive tract, which effectively reduces appetite.

How much weight can you lose on tirzepatide?

In clinical trials reported in The New England Journal of Medicine, people who took the maximum dose of Tirzepatide over 72 weeks lost an average of 21 % of their body weight.

Side effects:

Like most medications, Tirzepatide can have side effects. These include mild fatigue, intermittent nausea, constipation, and diarrhoea. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
